National Pet Day on 11th April is dedicated to all the animals who become a part of our lives and our families. The special occasion is also devoted to those pets who do not get the love and care they deserve.
In this article, we will tell you how this day came into existence and how it became a global pet celebration.
National Pet Day was established in 2006 by animal welfare activist and lifestyle expert Colleen Paige to honour the joy pets bring to our lives. She also wanted to draw attention to the needs of the numerous animals of all kinds that are waiting to be adopted at shelters. She advised folks looking for purebred dogs and cats to get in touch with rescue groups rather than visiting a breeder. Hence, “Don’t Shop, Adopt!” became the motto of pet adoption.
According to an estimate by the Humane Society of the United States, 13 million cats and dogs are thought to enter shelters annually. Some of these animals were abandoned pets, some were given up by owners who could no longer care for them, and some were taken in court proceedings.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters throughout the country each year. Additionally, 1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats enter their forever homes.
In order to encourage the population for adopting animals and celebrate love for pets, she started the movement called “National Pet Day”.
Colleen’s holiday began in the United States but quickly spread overseas. The day is now observed by pet owners in many countries, including the UK, Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Spain, Guam, Scotland, and many others.
Many celebrities have joined the cause and have vouched for National Pet Day celebrations. Taylor Swift, Ellen DeGeneres, Ricky Gervais, Cee Lo Green, Jimmy Fallon, Willy Nelson, Kevin Bacon, Seth Myers, and others have all endorsed National Pet Day.
Social media has also aided in spreading joy and raising awareness for Colleen’s cause. During his tenure as the president of the US, Barack Obama put a photo of Bo, one of the two Portuguese water dogs and won over supporters on all sides of the political aisle.
